KUCHING: Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Ripin Lamat, has called on the Sarawak badminton team to make the most of the Borneo Games Kuching 2025, using the tournament as a platform to prepare for SUKMA 2026 and the 2027 SEA Games.
“The Borneo Games is not only a showcase for our athletes’ talent but also one of the best platforms to prepare for future tournaments, including SUKMA 2026 and the SEA Games.
“It also provides opportunities for the players to spar against each other and other contingent teams,” he told reporters when met at Stadium Perpaduan today.
This morning, the men’s team badminton squad added another gold to Sarawak’s tally, a promising sign for the state.
“I hope our players will continue to perform well in the individual events this afternoon so that we can add even more gold medals to our count,” Ripin said.
Looking ahead to the second day of competition, Ripin who is also Sarawak contingent’s chef-de-mission (CDM) expressed confidence that Sarawak athletes would continue to shine across all events while gaining valuable experience in high-level competition.
As of Thursday (September 25), Sarawak enjoyed a strong start at the Games, securing 16 golds, 19 silvers, and 12 bronzes on the first day alone, placing the host state at the top of the medal standings.
Sabah sits second with 26 medals, followed by East Kalimantan with seven.
