GEORGE TOWN: Penang now accounts for 80 per cent of national gold manufacturing output, solidifying its position as the industry’s stronghold, said Federation of Goldsmiths and Jewellers Association President, Datuk Chiah Hock Yew.

Speaking at the Malaysia Gold and Jewellery Trade Exhibition 2025, Chiah noted that Penang and Seberang Perai could become a regional gold trade hub.

“We welcome global exhibitors and buyers to experience the allure of Malaysian gold,” he said.

Malaysia’s gold-related exports rose to RM2.34 billion in the first quarter of 2025 – up 9.76 per cent from RM2.13 billion a year earlier, according to the Department of Statistics.

Penang Chief Minister, Chow Kon Yeow, who officiated the event, said the recent surge in gold prices – now above USD3,000 (RM12,870) per ounce – reflects its growing value amid global economic volatility.

He added, “We aim to position Penang not just as an exhibition host but a national leader in gold and jewellery production.”
