KUCHING: Sarawak’s rising golf star, Mirabel Ting, has climbed to second place in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) — the highest-ever position achieved by a Malaysian.

The 19-year-old from Miri, who currently represents Florida State University, has consistently been among the world’s elite, staying inside the top five for the past 18 weeks. As of April 2, she officially moved up to World No. 2.

The Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) took to Facebook to celebrate her historic achievement.

“Congratulations to Mirabel Ting on rising to 2nd place in the World Amateur Golf Rankings — the highest-ever ranking achieved by a Malaysian! A remarkable milestone for Malaysian golf,” the post read.

While reaching a career high, Ting also competed at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur (ANWA) — one of the most prestigious events in women’s amateur golf.

However, she faced a tough challenge during the opening round at Champions Retreat Golf Club in Georgia, carding a four-over 76.

The narrow score saw her miss the cut by just one shot, bringing an early end to her ANWA campaign.

In an Instagram post, Ting reflected on the experience, calling it an “unbelievable week” despite falling just short of qualifying for the final round at Augusta National.

She expressed gratitude to her coaches, friends and family who were there to support her.

For the record, the previous highest WAGR position by a Malaysian was World No. 5, achieved by Gavin Green in the men’s rankings.
