KUCHING: Joseph Kalang Tie, one of Sarawak’s most iconic football figures, has a message for aspiring footballers in the state — talent may get you noticed, but attitude will determine how far you go.
Now serving as assistant coach for Kuching City FC’s youth team, the former national and Terengganu midfielder said character, discipline, and humility are just as important as skill.
“Talent cannot change everything. It’s all about your attitude, your character, and how hard you’re willing to work,” said Joseph in an interview with Sarawak Tribune recently.
Hailing from Baram, Joseph enjoyed a decorated career representing Sarawak, Terengganu, and the Malaysian national team. His football journey also saw him face international clubs — including Chelsea FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC.
Now on the sidelines as a coach, Joseph is passionate about helping the next generation grow.
When scouting young talent, he looks beyond technical ability.
“I always tell players: we can teach technique, but attitude comes from within.
“If you respect others, stay humble, and keep praying — you’ll go far,” he said.
Joseph also paid tribute to mentors who shaped his own career, including former coaches Robert Alberts, Irfan Bakti, and Pengiran Bala.
“They taught me more than football. They taught me how to live with purpose, with faith, and to never forget my roots.”
As Sarawak football continues its rebuilding journey, Joseph remains a steady and passionate voice calling for structure, humility, and belief.
