KUCHING: Single mothers should not overlook their own physical, mental and emotional well-being while managing the demands of providing for and caring for their families.

Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said single mothers often shoulder multiple responsibilities as breadwinners, homemakers and educators of their children.

In meeting these daily responsibilities, many tended to prioritise the needs of their families, sometimes at the expense of their own health.

“Health is our most valuable asset. Without a healthy body and sound mind, it is difficult for a person to carry out their responsibilities effectively,” she said.

She said this when officiating at the ‘Let’s Move La Vida’ health workshop organised by Persatuan Ibu Tunggal Sarawak (PITSA) in collaboration with the Sarawak Health Department held at Pustaka Negeri Sarawak here today (Jul 25).

Fatimah said maintaining good health would also enable single mothers to remain active in employment, entrepreneurship and community activities while being better equipped to face challenges and make informed decisions.

The workshop aimed to improve health awareness and literacy among single mothers, encouraging them to take better care of their overall well-being.

Among the topics covered were healthy lifestyles, dementia, mental and emotional health, as well as maintaining a healthy diet on an affordable budget.

Fatimah added that the Sarawak Government, through her ministry, remains committed to empowering women, including single mothers, and ensuring their well-being.

As of May 31 this year, PITSA has 14,285 members across 56 branches throughout Sarawak, reflecting its extensive role in supporting the welfare and well-being of single mothers in the state.
