MOSCOW: US technology giant Google has changed its policy on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) models in weapons development due to its increasing involvement in global affairs, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti, quoting The Guardian newspaper.

“We are increasingly being asked to have a seat at the table in some important conversations, and I think it’s good for society that Google has a role in those conversations in areas where we do specialise – cybersecurity, or some of the work around biology, and many more,” Google President of Global Affairs Kent Walker said in an all-staff meeting on Wednesday, records of which were reviewed by the newspaper.

He also said that despite the fact that some of the prohibitions present in the original 2018 edition of the AI principles “don’t jive well with those more nuanced conversations we’re having now,” it remains the company’s priority that the benefits of the overhaul “substantially outweigh the risks.”

Last week, Google revised its AI application principles, removing the entry that prohibited the use of artificial models to develop technologies that harm or could harm humans, including surveillance and weapons. The company cited the need for democratic nations to lead in AI to contribute to global growth and support national security. – Bernama-Sputnik/Ria Novosti
