KUCHING: Sarawak is targeting at least 50 per cent local product utilisation in government building projects, opening greater opportunities for local manufacturers and construction-related businesses.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the target was aimed at strengthening local industries while ensuring that more economic benefits from development are retained within Sarawak.
“To achieve utilisation of at least 50 per cent local products in government building construction, we are aware that the environment for manufacturing plants and related businesses needs to be primed for expansion,” he said.
His speech was read by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian at the opening of the SHEDA Property Expo 2026 here today.
Abang Johari said the state government is also spearheading the adoption of green construction technology to support and develop businesses capable of responding to emerging opportunities.
He said the measures form part of efforts to create a modern, sustainable and locally driven built environment while positioning the property and construction sectors for future changes.
The government is also targeting 70 per cent utilisation of Industrialised Building System (IBS) technology in future government buildings and schools to improve construction efficiency, quality and sustainability.
Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology will meanwhile be utilised for government projects valued at RM10 million and above, while green features are to be incorporated into all new government buildings.
Abang Johari said the government intends to lead by example rather than place the responsibility for sustainable development solely on private developers.
“As you can see, the Sarawak Government is not merely telling private property developers that ‘you’ need to do something.
“‘We’ are choosing to lead the way by setting these transparent standards for ourselves and for the projects we undertake,” he said.
He added that the transition towards greener construction would also create opportunities for businesses prepared to adopt new technologies and respond to changing industry requirements.
