KUCHING: The digitalisation of Sarawak’s government services has surpassed 62 percent this year, placing the state ahead of schedule in its mission to achieve full digital access by 2030.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg stated that, under the forthcoming 13th Malaysia Plan (2026-2030), the Sarawak Government will reinforce its commitment to both digitalisation and sustainability.
“This includes expanding the adoption of technology across the government, business, and community sectors,” he said in his keynote address at the International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak 2025 (IDECS 2025), held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today.
He emphasised that Sarawak’s progress to date demonstrates the state’s ability to deliver on its promises – underpinned by a strong foundation in digital infrastructure.
“Currently, internet coverage in Sarawak’s populated areas has exceeded 90 percent, driven by the construction of SMART 600 towers, the rollout of 5G, expansion of fibre networks, and the Sarawak Rural Broadband Network (MySRBN) initiative.
“We are also close to achieving 7,000 telecommunication towers under the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, aimed at ensuring near-universal digital coverage throughout Sarawak.
“Each tower constructed represents a step towards equal opportunity,” he added.
Beyond infrastructure, Abang Johari noted that the government’s efforts also focus on empowering micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which form the backbone of Sarawak’s economy.
“Under PCDS 2030, Sarawak aims for 30,000 MSMEs to adopt digital platforms.
“Through programmes such as Go Digital, SME Digitise, and the Sarawak Digital Mall, over 15,000 MSMEs have already digitalised their operations — unlocking new markets and opportunities.
“These digital initiatives are designed to equip Sarawakians with the tools and capabilities to compete globally, while staying rooted in local values,” he said.
