KUCHING: The state government is placing strong emphasis on the role of SACOFA Sdn Bhd (SACOFA) in driving the expansion of telecommunications infrastructure across the state.

Utility and Telecommunication Minister, Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, said the initiative is also important to be implemented in collaboration with all agencies and telecommunications service providers in Sarawak.

He added that the state government holds a majority interest in SACOFA, which means it is also one of the government-owned agencies through the State Financial Secretary Incorporated (SFS Inc.).

“However, SACOFA is also owned by another shareholder, which is Cahya Mata Sarawak (CMS).

“Therefore, with the acquisition of SACOFA as a majority-owned agency of the Sarawak government, I believe there are many efforts that can be implemented together with the shareholders,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters at the Ministry’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri Open House at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today.

He explained that the government, through SFS Inc., holds more than 51 per cent of the shares in the company.

“As a result, some changes in management have already taken place, including changes in the composition of the board of directors.

“Moving forward, we will also look into how we can further strengthen the role of SACOFA,” he said.

SACOFA continues to grow as the backbone of Sarawak’s communication system, with more than 1,688 telecommunications towers – comprising 1,250 commercial towers and 438 sites under the Universal Service Provision (USP) tower initiative – as well as an optical fibre network stretching over 12,000 kilometres across the state.
