KUCHING: The Sarawak government has pledged its support for Kuching South City Council’s (MBKS) plan to revive the Malaysia-China Friendship Park (Taman Sahabat) in Jalan Song, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said.

Dr Sim highlighted the long-standing collaboration between the Malaysia-China Friendship Park and Rimbunan Hijau (RH) Group whose building, commonly known as the Chagee building, stands adjacent to the park over the past two decades in enhancing the area and its facilities.

“Once MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng submits the proposal, I will review it carefully before giving my approval. Don’t worry, I will definitely assist, because Sarawak is my home,” he said.

Dr Sim, who is also Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government (MPHLG), said this during the Mooncake Festival 2025 celebration at Friendship Park last night (Oct 6).

Earlier, Wee described the Friendship Park as one of Kuching’s most beloved recreational spots, popular among residents for jogging, tai chi, family gatherings, dates, and social meet-ups demonstrating how deeply the park is cherished by the community.

He said MBKS is preparing a proposal to give the park a facelift, including improved lighting and upgraded facilities to enhance safety, comfort, and aesthetics for visitors.

“We will be submitting the proposal soon, and we sincerely hope for continued support from Dr Sim to make this park even better for all Kuching residents,” he added.

Wee also thanked Isekai for co-organising the Mooncake Festival with MBKS, noting that the event embodies the 3Ps concept — Public, Private and People partnership that brings the community together.

He added that the Mid-Autumn or Mooncake Festival has evolved into a celebration enjoyed by people of all races and backgrounds, strengthening unity and friendship through shared traditions.

The celebration drew hundreds of residents and families to the Friendship Park, where they enjoyed cultural performances, lantern processions, and mooncake sharing under the full moon.
