KUCHING: Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar urges the state government, employers, workers and society at large to work together in building a work environment that is safe, healthy and fair to ensure a prosperous Sarawak.

In his message in conjunction with Labour Day 2025, Wan Junaidi emphasised that harmonious workplace relations are essential for sustainable productivity and collective well-being.

“A prosperous and developed nation is built upon the strength and dedication of its workforce. Behind every success lies the relentless contribution of the labour force, whether in the public or private sectors, in cities or villages.

“There must be no room for any form of oppression or injustice, as only through harmonious working environments we can enhance productivity and collective well-being for the progress of our state and country,” he said.

The Governor and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, also conveyed Labour Day wishes to all workers in Sarawak and across Malaysia, expressing appreciation for their vital role in nation-building.

“This year’s theme, Pekerja Kesuma Bangsa, recognises workers as precious assets who strengthen national identity and progress.

“It is also in line with the rebranding of the Ministry of Human Resources to KESUMA, which emphasises the values of humanity, well-being, and harmony in the world of work.

“In Sarawak, we take pride in the diversity of our employment sectors, including oil and gas, agriculture, tourism, and the digital economy.

“Every worker, whether in urban areas or remote regions, plays a vital role in realising the state’s development agenda. They are the backbone ensuring the continuity of progress for the well-being of the people,” he said.

He also emphasised that harmonious relations between employers and employees form the foundation of sustainable productivity and collective well-being.

“Therefore, it is our shared responsibility to ensure a conducive, respectful, and fair working environment at all levels of organization — from top management to the front line,” he added.

He said that Labour Day also presents an opportunity for the people to reassess employment policies and practices in line with the government’s commitment to strengthening social protection, expanding skills training opportunities, and providing fair and inclusive employment for all segments of society.

“The Sarawak Government is also working to ensure that local workers are competitive, innovative, and ready to explore new industries that will become the cornerstone of future competitiveness and prosperity for the state,” he said.

He noted that Labour Day which is celebrated annually on 1 May, is more than just a public holiday as it is a symbol of appreciation for workers’ struggle in fighting for fair rights and better working conditions.

“This celebration is rooted in the international labour movement, which championed basic workers’ rights, including the eight-hour workday – a pivotal point in the history of trade unions and the labour protection policies we benefit from today.

“The history of this celebration reminds us of the workers’ struggle that began in the West and Europe during the 18th century during the Industrial Revolution.

“Today, Labour Day is celebrated globally as a tribute to the working class who have contributed to national development and economic advancement,” he added.

With the spirit of unity and mutual appreciation, Wan Junaidi and his wife expressed their hope that this celebration will strengthen the commitment of all Sarawakians to make this state a fair, safe, and prosperous place to work for everyone.

“Let us realise the vision of Sarawak as an advanced and prosperous state by 2030,” said Wan Junaidi.
