THE Sarawak government is confident of laying a strong and robust foundation for Sarawak’s future as a significant player in the hydrogen economy.

Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr. Hazland Abang Hipni said that Sarawak is still developing specialised technical skills especially clean hydrogen.

“Sarawak has the potential to leverage its abundant hydropower resources to produce cost-effective clean hydrogen, utilising strategic initiatives that build on its natural strengths,” he said.

He said this during the question-and-answer session in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today.

He was responding to a question from Miro Simuh (GPS-Serembu) on the barriers to hydrogen economy in terms of comparison of high investment and the immediate return to the economy.

Dr. Hazland said Sarawak has a unique topography that gives a comparative advantage in hydroelectricity production that results in lower industrial electricity tariffs.

“By harnessing this renewable hydropower to drive the electrolysis process, Sarawak can produce clean hydrogen efficiently and sustainably, converting water into hydrogen without carbon emissions and furthering its commitment to clean energy,” he said.

He also said Sarawak’s proactive efforts to position itself as a regional leader in clean hydrogen production are reflected in its flagship projects, such as the H2biscus and H2ornbill initiatives, and its partnerships with international stakeholders.

“These collaborations not only enhance technical expertise but also attract investment, helping to establish Sarawak as a key player in the region clean hydrogen market,” he said.
