SIBU: The government of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) not only practises freedom of religion but it also supports the welfare of all religious groups in the state.

Under the GPS government led by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan branch chairman Robert Lau said the amount allocated to support other religious organisations apart from Islam, under Unifor has increased to RM50 million a year.

“Churches in rural villages also gain from these grants that the state government has given through Unifor,” Lau said during one of his rural visits near here.

During his rounds of visit, Lau handed out cheques to the recipient churches, and one of these churches was the Methodist Iban Church at Rassau, along Batang Igan.

“Sarawak under GPS is unique. We are the only state with this Unit For Other Religions, which makes sure that no religions are left out of mainstream development,” Lau said.
