SIBU: A decisive victory for Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) in the upcoming Sarawak polls is essential to safeguarding the state’s political stability, sustaining development momentum and ensuring that the interests of Sarawakians continue to be championed effectively.
Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek stressed that a strong mandate from the people would empower the state government to accelerate development initiatives, upgrade public infrastructure, enhance social welfare programmes and create better opportunities for future generations across Sarawak.
He added that Sarawak’s interests are best protected by local-based parties that possess a deep understanding of the state’s unique needs, aspirations and development priorities.
“With a strong mandate from the people, we can deliver more development, improve essential facilities, safeguard the welfare of our communities and ensure that our young people enjoy a brighter and more promising future,” he said at the Gawai Dayak Ngiling Bidai luncheon held at Sianggelila Xiqing Restaurant here on Sunday (June 21), which brought together community leaders, longhouse chiefs, branch leaders, committee members and residents from Nanga Salim, Bukit Penyau and Sentosa.
The event marked the traditional conclusion of the Gawai Dayak celebrations and served as a platform for strengthening ties among local communities.
Chieng also expressed his appreciation to all parties involved in organising the gathering, describing the Ngiling Bidai tradition as an important cultural heritage that symbolises unity, mutual cooperation and respect for the customs passed down through generations.
He noted that such values remain highly relevant in Sarawak’s multicultural society and continue to serve as the foundation of social harmony and inter-community understanding.
Touching on his responsibilities as the elected representative for Bukit Assek, Chieng reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that development and public welfare remain at the forefront of his service.
He noted that longhouse communities within the Bukit Assek constituency have never been left behind in the state’s development agenda, with various projects implemented through the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) based on local needs and priorities.
“As a people’s representative, my responsibility extends beyond physical development. It is equally important to ensure that the welfare of the people is protected regardless of race, religion or background.”
Looking ahead, Chieng expressed hope that continued public support for GPS would enable ongoing development efforts to be strengthened and expanded, paving the way for a more prosperous, progressive and inclusive future for both Bukit Assek and Sarawak.
