KUCHING:  Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is firm on contesting all seats in Sarawak and will not compromise or allocate any constituency to other parties, said Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and UKAS), Datuk Abdullah Saidol.

Abdullah, who is also a Supreme Council member of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), said his personal stance was that GPS should stand independently in every seat in the state.

“My position is that for every seat in Sarawak, we will not compromise with any other party. GPS will contest all seats,” he told reporters when met at the ‘Walk For Health Programme with Premier’ here on Sunday (Feb 1).

He added, however, that the final decision rests with the party leadership.

“Ultimately, the final decision lies with the party president and the GPS leadership,” he said.

Nevertheless, Abdullah reiterated his belief that GPS would not concede even a single seat to any external party seeking to contest in Sarawak.

“As a member of the PBB Supreme Council, I feel that GPS will not give even a seat to other parties. We believe we can manage ourselves and, at the same time, continue to develop Sarawak without interference from outside parties,” he said.

Abdullah also cautioned certain quarters, particularly from Peninsular Malaysia, against actions or rhetoric that could inflame tensions and unsettle the public.

“I would like to advise certain individuals, especially those from the Peninsula who wish to stir the situation, to be careful. When society becomes too restless, it can be difficult to control,” he said.

The last Sarawak state election was held on Dec 18, 2021, which saw GPS secure a landslide victory, winning 76 seats and a supermajority in the state legislature. Of the figure, PBB fielded 48 candidates.
