KUCHING: The youth movement within Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is set to play a crucial role in helping the coalition secure victory across all constituencies in the next state election, says Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Youth chief, Datuk Martin Ben.
He said the movement is ready to mobilise once the coalition’s leadership gives the signal, adding that youth members across GPS component parties – Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) – are already active on the ground.
“We will follow the direction of the GPS leadership. Once it is decided and if we face a state election this year, I believe the youth movement will play an important role in helping GPS win all the seats,” he added.
Martin said this when met by reporters after chairing the first GPS Youth meeting at the PBB headquarters here today (Feb 6).
He shared that the meetings among GPS Youth leaders focused on strengthening cooperation between component parties and enhancing grassroots outreach to better explain government initiatives and development programmes, particularly in rural areas.
“A lot was discussed on how we can mobilise GPS Youth from PBB, SUPP, PRS and PDP to work together, go down to the ground and help explain the government’s initiatives to the people at the grassroots level,” he reiterated.
“We also discussed programmes that will be organised. In the near future, we may carry out a joint GPS roadshow, travelling around. That’s the plan for now. Also looking for funding.”
At the same time, Martin welcomed newly appointed youth leaders for the 2025-2027 term across GPS component parties, noting that leadership transitions provide opportunities for fresh ideas and stronger collaboration.
He said that while there was some sharing of issues during the discussions, the main focus remains on communicating government policies and ongoing development efforts to the public.
Commenting on the readiness of GPS Youth, Martin said members from all component parties have been consistently active in their respective constituencies.
“From what I see in PBB, we are always on the ground running programmes and helping our elected representatives in their areas. I believe PRS, SUPP and PDP are doing the same. Maybe not everything is widely publicised but we are consistently active,” he stressed.
