KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk James Chan said four contractors for grass cutting under MBKS were suspended last year for unsatisfactory work.

In a press conference yesterday, Chan said the council was strict on ensuring a job well done and would not hesitate to suspend the contractors if there were complaints made.

He said even late last year, he was not satisfied with the grass cutting at some of the council roads. Chan was clarifying the recent controversial “long grass” along roads that were not under any council’s jurisdiction.

The long grass issue sparked off a tirade of arguments between Pakatan Harapan MPs and SUPP leaders and members.

Chan said from the reports he read it was good that the issue was over and believed that the 2019 Visit Sarawak Year would be a good start for all.

Explaining the type of roads which included protocol roads, council and federal roads, Chan said the council would only handle council roads which is about 700km long. Grass cutting and drain clearing along council roads cost RM 4.5 million.

He assured that his council staff would keep monitoring and also receive feedback from members of the public.

“We welcome any feedback so that we can provide better service sto the people,” he added.

Also present at the press conference were city secretary Vincent Ang and councillors Goh Tze Hui and Mohamad Taufik.
