KUCHING: A newly assembled Miri-based frisbee team made its first appearance at the Swinburne Indoor Open, highlighting the steady rise of grassroots frisbee in Sarawak as players with less than a year of training tested themselves against regional competition.

Team UNKNWNS, made up largely of first-time tournament players, stepped into their first-ever external competition at the two-day Swinburne Indoor Open, which features around 180 players from Singapore, Brunei, West Malaysia and Sarawak.

Despite being new to the competitive scene, the Miri outfit showed early promise, recording two wins and two losses on the opening day as they adjusted to a higher-intensity level of play compared to casual pick-up sessions back home.

Team representative, Su Wei Jie, said the opportunity to compete in an organised tournament was a valuable experience for the squad.

“It’s our first time joining the Open. We actually joined the first year Swinburne made the frisbee competition, but this time we brought more teammates from our hometown,”he told Sarawak Tribune today.

He added that most of the current squad are new to organised competition, with the team only recently expanding their player base in Miri.

“Previously it was SIO 2024, 2025 and now this is the third year. But for the majority, it’s their first time,” he said.

Su noted that the team has been playing for less than a year in a more structured way, transitioning from casual games into competitive fixtures.

“We just started playing more intensely in Miri. Usually it’s just pick-up games, not that intense. This is our first time in any outside competition,” he said.

He then said that frisbee is quite niche, not a lot of people know this sport.

“So it’s a good opportunity for us to come and enjoy it. Thanks to Swinburne for organising this kind of tournament,” he said.

The Swinburne Indoor Open, held from 9 am to 5pm over Saturday and Sunday (April 4-5), continues to serve as a regional platform for mixed and emerging teams.

For Team UNKNWNS, the focus remains on experience, development and building stronger participation in future tournaments.
