BINTULU: The role of the community is crucial in ensuring that the Sarawak Government’s efforts to safeguard environmental sustainability can be fully implemented.
In stating this, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, Datuk Majang Renggi, said that aside from government policies and laws, grassroots involvement is the main pillar in maintaining ecosystem balance and reducing pollution.
He highlighted that the state government has implemented various measures, including the passing of the Natural Resources and Environmental Ordinance 2024, the Environment (Reduction of Greenhouse Gases Emission) Ordinance 2023, conducting Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) studies prior to development projects, as well as continuous digital environmental monitoring.
“However, all these efforts will not be effective without awareness and collective action from the people, especially village communities who face pollution and climate change impacts directly,” he said.
He said this when officiating at the closing of the Community Environmental Awareness Programme organised by the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) at Kampung Kuala Nyalau here today.
Majang, who is also the Samalaju Assemblyman, expressed appreciation to the Kampung Kuala Nyalau community, which he described as the best example in supporting local-level environmental awareness programmes.
“The success of this programme proves that when the government, relevant agencies and the community work hand in hand, we can ensure Sarawak continues to progress as a green and sustainable state for future generations,” he said.
