SIBU: The gravel road in front of Rh Francis Jingga longhouse in Sg Aup has been upgraded to a concrete road.

The project has been completed and was officially handed over yesterday (Apr 8).

“The project was funded under the Special Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) Fund, a special allocation approved by the Premier of Sarawak for the Bawang Assan Branch of the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Community Development Team,” SUPP Bawang Assan said in a press statement yesterday (Apr 8).

The project was implemented by the Engineering Department of the Sibu Municipal Council.

SUPP Bawang Assan Chief Councillor Kevin Lau, together with team members, representatives from the contractor, Sibu Municipal Council engineers, and the longhouse chief, conducted a site inspection to ensure the upgraded public road met all required standards before the official handover.

Lau said the road upgrading project, costing RM50,000, transformed the previously gravel road into a concrete one, greatly improving access and safety for longhouse residents.

He added that the longhouse chief, supported by community leaders and local representatives, submitted a request for road improvement last year.

The main concern stemmed from the area’s geography, which caused frequent waterlogging after rain.

Following that, the team and council officers conducted a site visit. Now that the project is fully completed, the drainage issue is expected to be resolved.

“We are grateful to the Sibu Municipal Council’s Engineering Department for their close cooperation with our team, ensuring the project’s smooth execution and bringing great convenience to the local longhouse residents,” he added.
