KUCHING: Sarawak will fully support Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s efforts to lift Malaysia as a green energy hub in Asia, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said that during his trip abroad, international technology giant Siemens Energy briefed him on a breakthrough innovation that allows the production of 350kg of hydrogen per hour.
This, he said, could transform Malaysia’s capacity to compete globally in the renewable energy sector.
“In Sarawak, we currently produce 130kg of hydrogen in one day. So, with this new technology, we can jointly elevate Malaysia as a country that complies with international standards in terms of energy,” he said.
He said this during a dinner function at Riverside Majestic hotel here yesterday (Sept 11).
Abang Johari also highlighted Sarawak Energy Berhad’s (SEB) growing reputation on the global stage.
He said SEB had recently received an award from the International Hydropower Association (HPA), which recognised the Bakun Hydroelectric Plant (HEP) as the only site in the world producing energy of such high quality.
“Under international standards, our Bakun project was recognised — the only place in the world producing energy of such high quality.
“This is one of our efforts to elevate Malaysia’s image. And thank God, much of our work has been able to contribute towards Malaysia Madani,” he said.
At the same time, Abang Johari commended Anwar’s leadership on the international stage, citing his role in easing tensions between Cambodia and Thailand as well as his stance on global issues.
“The Prime Minister himself has elevated Malaysia’s standard in terms of diplomacy. When he managed to help, even in small ways, to resolve the Cambodia-Thailand issue, the world recognised that peace is his objective.
“I also heard our Prime Minister remarks on what happened in Qatar — that is blatant disregard for a nation’s sovereignty and for the peace that we seek.
“Therefore, we feel that he has elevated our image as a champion of peace at the international level,” he said.
He also said that Malaysia’s harmony and unity were essential to building a strong and prosperous nation.
“Here in Sarawak, of course, within this federation, people say — even the tongue sometimes bites itself. There may be small issues, but we can resolve them in the spirit of a Malaysian family.
“If Sarawak is strong, Malaysia will be greater,” said the Premier.
