SERIAN: A proposal to revive the 100-year-old Baki Bazaar as a night market – similar to the iconic Siniawan Night Market in Bau – has received strong support from the local community and Serian District Council (SDC).
SDC Chairman, Datuk Peter Minos, said the idea to bring the bazaar back to life as a night market was discussed and agreed upon during a meeting between the council and Chinese community leaders today.
He said the council is committed to working closely with Tarat Assemblyman, Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, to ensure the plan becomes a reality.
“Everyone was excited and enthusiastic about the proposed night market, which will generate business income for food vendors.
“We at SDC will work closely with the local representative to make the Baki Night Market a success, just like the one in Siniawan, Bau,” he said.
Located just 15 minutes from Serian town off the Pan Borneo Highway, Baki Bazaar is steeped in history and known for its unique character and culinary charm.
The old Chinese market, once a bustling centre of community life, was established over a century ago by a warm and close-knit community known for serving some of the best local dishes.
The bazaar is already a daily spot for breakfast and lunch among nearby villagers, especially the Bidayuh community from Kampung Taee and Kampung Bunga.
