KUCHING: The Hari Raya 2025 road safety campaign will be launched in Mukah on March 17.
State Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, said this year’s campaign will be slightly different, like the Chinese New Year initiative where angpau packets were distributed.
“Following the success of the ministry’s road safety-themed red packets during Chinese New Year, we are excited to introduce a special edition green packet (sampul duit raya) for Hari Raya.
“This initiative aims to raise public awareness about the importance of road safety, especially during the festive season when traffic volume increases significantly,” he said this during a press conference here today.
He said the green packet will feature colourful cartoon illustrations representing Sarawak’s diverse transportation modes, including the upcoming AirBorneo airline as well as land and riverine transport.
“With a vibrant emerald green theme symbolising prosperity and harmony, it also integrates festive Hari Raya elements.
“The reverse side of the packet carries key road safety messages to remind the public of responsible road use during and beyond the festive season.
“These packets serve as both monetary gift carriers and tools for promoting road safety awareness within families and communities.
“So the goal is to ensure safer journey for all road users during the festive period,” he said.
Lee urged all motorists to exercise extra caution, follow traffic rules, avoid reckless driving, practise patience, and ensure their vehicles are in good conditions before travelling.
“The key message we want to convey is that safety is a shared responsibility.
“Studies show that accidents occur primarily due to human behaviour, namely, human factors.
“Stay alert and well-rested before a long journey as fatigue can be as dangerous as reckless driving.
“Drivers should take breaks every two to three hours or have a co-driver to share the journey,” he added.
Additionally, he said that vehicle maintenance is crucial and reminded motorists to check their vehicles’ brakes, tires, lights and the engine to ensure everything is in working condition before hitting the road.
“We urge the private sector, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), committee leaders and everyone in society to support this cause.
“Prioritising safety helps prevent accidents, allowing everyone to celebrate peacefully,” he said.
