KUCHING: Sarawak’s men’s football team will focus on clearing the group stage before setting their sights on a deeper run at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA )2026 in Selangor next month.
Head coach, Firdaus Morshidi, said the team is taking a match-by-match approach as they prepare for the tournament.
“Our first target is to get through the group stage. If the players can go further than that, it will be a bonus for them,” he told Sarawak Tribune recently.
Sarawak have been drawn in Group A alongside Sabah and Terengganu, with the football competition kicking off on August 11 ahead of the official opening of the Games.
Firdaus said every group match will be crucial before the team can begin thinking about the knockout rounds.
“We have to focus on one match at a time during the group stage,” he added.
The squad comprises players from the President’s Cup and Youth Cup competitions, with 32 players currently named in the provisional squad’s long-list.
Firdaus added that the final 23-player squad for SUKMA 2026 will be announced on August 1.
