SIMUNJAN: The slope repair project at Gunung Ngeli needs to be expedited to ensure the safety of local residents, said Batang Sadong Member of Parliament, Rodiyah Sapiee.

She said the project also aims to maintain smooth access along the road, which serves as the main route for residents of Kampung Sual and surrounding areas.

Rodiyah added that the urgent need arises following several landslide incidents reported recently due to continuous rainfall, which has significantly increased safety risks in the area.

“The condition of the slope at Gunung Ngeli is currently at a critical level and requires immediate action through the implementation of comprehensive long-term mitigation measures.

“I hope that the application for funding to the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) for the Gunung Ngeli Slope Repair Project can be considered and approved as soon as possible so that long-term mitigation measures can be implemented in a comprehensive manner.

“At the same time, I also hope that the Samarahan Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) can carry out a technical assessment of the drainage system and culverts as a short-term mitigation measure to reduce risks and address soil erosion and landslide issues while awaiting the implementation of long-term solutions by the Public Works Department (PWD),” she said.

She said this when met after a special briefing session to address the landslide incidents in the Gunung Ngeli area, held at the Simunjan District Office Meeting Room on Friday.

Rodiyah also expressed hope that local residents would remain patient and continue to give their full cooperation to ensure everyone’s safety and the smooth implementation of the project in the future.

The discussion also involved the participation of various technical agencies, including the Samarahan Division PWD, the Samarahan Division DID, and the Sarawak Branch of the Minerals and Geoscience Department Malaysia.

The briefing session aimed to assess the current situation, identify risk levels and formulate both short-term and long-term mitigation measures to reduce the impact of disasters in the affected areas.
