Habitual offender jailed for theft attempt

KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here sentenced a habitual offender to one year and two months in prison for attempting to steal a motorcycle in front of a college last month.

Siong Siaw Khoon, 41, who has 20 prior criminal records, pleaded guilty to the charge before Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali.

He was charged under Section 379A of the Penal Code, read together with Section 511 of the same Code.

The offence was committed at Jalan Setia Raja at 2.15 pm on Aug 21.

According to the case facts, police on patrol spotted Siong loitering suspiciously near the college. When approached, he attempted to flee but was swiftly apprehended.

Investigations revealed that he was carrying several modified tools commonly used to steal motorcycles here.

He had also damaged the ignition box of a motorcycle and attempted to steal it before being arrested.

The case was prosecuted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Chuah Kai Sheng, while Siong was unrepresented.
