KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has advised residents in Tawau, Kunak, Semporna and Lahad Datu to remain calm and comply with instructions from the authorities following a tsunami warning issued after a magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck Mindanao, the Philippines, this morning.

He said the District Disaster Management Committees (JPBD) in the affected districts had been activated immediately to respond to and prepare for the situation.

“It is important for the people to remain calm and always comply with instructions from the authorities,” he said in a statement here today.

Hajiji said the State Government, through the State Disaster Operations Control Centre, is closely monitoring developments.

Earlier, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) issued a statement indicating that tsunami waves measuring up to 0.4 metres were expected to reach the coastal areas of the affected districts between 10.30 am and noon today. – BERNAMA
