LIMBANG: Handicraft entrepreneurs are encouraged to adopt strategic measures to strengthen online sales as part of efforts to expand their market among the local population.

Minister in the Premier’s Department, Datuk Seri John Sikie Tayai, emphasised that making full use of available facilities, including collaboration with the Sarawak Craft Council and the Malaysian Handicraft Development Corporation, is the best way to create opportunities for local entrepreneurs to penetrate wider markets.

According to him, online sales are a crucial step in helping local handicraft entrepreneurs not only at the state level but also in reaching international markets.

“With full support from relevant organisations, such as the Sarawak Craft Council, we can elevate local products to a higher level,” he said at the recent launch of the Gawai Medamit Bazaar.

He further stated that this is the right time to leverage technological development and online platforms that can help small and medium entrepreneurs in rural areas market their products without limitations.

Sikie also urged more local handicraft entrepreneurs to seize this opportunity to increase their competitiveness in the global market.

“This move is expected to open up more economic opportunities for rural communities and, at the same time, stimulate the growth of the entrepreneurial sector in Sarawak.

“With government support and cooperation from various parties, online sales are believed to have a significant impact on the advancement of the handicraft industry and the local economy,” he added.

The Gawai Medamit Bazaar programme, which brought together 22 sales stalls, also saw participation from the local community in showcasing local products and fostering a spirit of togetherness within the community.

Sikie also announced an allocation of RM25,000 to the Gawai Medamit Bazaar Organising Committee as a sign of support for the event.
