Hands-on internship elevates trainees’ skills and resilience

KUCHING: Success begins with writing, said Chief Executive Officer of Suara Sarawak and Sarawak Tribune, Datuk Dr Jeniri Amir, during a farewell ceremony for trainees held at the media’s office on Friday.

He highlighted that internships in journalism has allowed students to apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings as well as offered a comprehensive and realistic training environment.

Through a strategic collaboration between Suara Sarawak, Sarawak Tribune and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), students are given the opportunity to experience the real working world of journalism.

“At Suara Sarawak and Sarawak Tribune, students do not merely undergo basic training.

“They participate in a wide range of hands-on sessions, including interview techniques, news writing and editing,” he said.

Dr Jeniri stressed that the ‘field experience’ played a vital role in sharpening the core skills required in today’s demanding media landscape.

Beyond that, such training helps build self-confidence, language proficiency, professional conduct and valuable industry connections.

He expressed pride in the 13 trainees’ achievements, stating that feedback received showed they had significantly enhanced their experience during the 12-week placement.

“Their proactive attitude and performance throughout the internship were especially commendable” he said.

Looking forward, Dr Jeniri assures that the collaboration with UNIMAS and other local media institutions would continue to be strengthened.

He believes this initiative will ensure students are well-prepared to enter the workforce with the necessary skills and strong professional values.

“We are confident that this ongoing partnership will produce more young talents who are not only capable but also have the potential to shine in both the local and international journalism industry,” he added.

At the event, Aisyah Ardila Abdul Rahman and Lakesh Kumar Chandran were presented with the Outstanding Trainee Journalist Award for their excellence during the three-month internship at Suara Sarawak and Sarawak Tribune.

Also present were Executive Editor of Suara Sarawak, Rohana Wahed, and UNIMAS representatives, Siti Haslina Hussin, Dr Jamilah Maliki and Dr Noratikah Mohamad Ashari.
