MIRI :Despites the Ministry of Transport Malaysia’s announcement that drivers no longer to carry around a physical copy of their driving licence and the road tax displayed on their vehicle windscreen, however, as in Sarawak, it would not be the case.

According to Minister for Transport Sarawak Datuk Sri Lee Kim in a statement today, for Sarawak’s vehicles crossing Sarawak’s border to Brunei Darussalam or Kalimantan Barat, drivers must abide to the laws and regulations of that counties, as both are maintaining the usual procedure which physical road tax are required to display on their vehicles and carrying physical driving license when entering Brunei Darussalam and Indonesia.
“My Ministry will work closely with the Consul General Office of Brunei Darussalam and Consul General Office of Indonesia in Kuching on the subject matter and also bring it up in the BIMP EAGA meeting,” Lee said in a statement.

On February 10 this year, the Minister for Transport Anthony Loke Stew Fook announced that the Ministry of Transport Malaysia and JPJ will no longer need drivers to carry around a physical copy of their dnving licence and do not need to have the road tax displayed on their vehicle windscreen.

Before the announcement on 10 February, this was the requirement under Section 20 of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333).

“All drivers in Sarawak should note that this is the first phase of the Ministry of Transport Malaysia and the Road Transport Department (JPJ)’s initiative to encourage drivers and vehicle owners to switch to the digital platform to help reduce the long queues at the JPJ counters,” Lee disclosed.

The drivers just need to download the MyJPJ app from the Apple App Store or Google PlayStore or the Huawei App Gallery.

“The public should not panic because during this early stage all owners of private vehicles are given time to adapt to the digital system,” he added.

Lee further added that the Minister for Transport Malaysia reiterated that drivers can still obtain a physical copy of their road tax from JPJ offices or the post office and stick it onto your car as well as carry around physical driving licence for now.
