PONTIANAK: The haze currently affecting Kuching may not be originating from West Kalimantan, according to its Governor, Bapak Drs.H.Ria Norsan, who said the situation in his province remained under control.
Speaking in response to concerns from Sarawakians about the return of haze in the region, the Governor clarified that West Kalimantan had managed to keep fire hotspots in check through continuous monitoring and swift action.
“In West Kalimantan itself, the haze or smoke situation is still under control.
“The highest number of fire hotspots right now is actually in Riau Province, on the mainland. The haze appears to be coming from that direction,” he said to reporters during the Sarawak Tourism Board Travel Fair at Ayani Mega Mall in Pontianak today.
He added that authorities in West Kalimantan are actively monitoring potential fire outbreaks via satellite and are prepared to act immediately if any hotspots expand.
“If we detect any large ones, we extinguish them right away,” he said, expressing hope that such efforts would continue to prevent serious flare-ups in the province.
The haze in Kuching has sparked public concern over its impact on air quality and health, particularly among vulnerable groups.
