BELÉM (Brazil): Sarawak reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable development and global climate action by taking part in the 30th United Nations climate change conference (COP30) here on Monday (Nov 10).
The summit, officiated by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, gathered world leaders and experts to discuss strategies for tackling the climate crisis.
Energy and Environmental Sustainability Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni led the Sarawak delegation, which included four officers from his ministry and 20 officials from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES).
Dr Hazland is scheduled to speak at the Science Panel for Borneo and deliver a keynote address titled ‘The Sarawak Journey’, outlining the state’s achievements and roadmap in sustainable energy development and biodiversity conservation.
In his opening speech, President Lula called for stronger global cooperation to protect tropical forests and accelerate the transition to renewable energy, describing COP30 as the ‘COP of Truth’ where nations must act based on science and collective responsibility.
Sarawak’s participation underscores the state government’s commitment to becoming a regional leader in green energy, in line with its goal of achieving a low-carbon economy and sustainable growth by 2030.
