KUCHING: Sarawak Head of State extends Chinese New Year greetings to the Chinese community, expressing hopes that the Year of the Horse will bring prosperity, unity and renewed energy to Sarawakians.

In his Chinese New Year 2026 message, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said this year marks the Year of the Horse for the Chinese community who will celebrate it tomorrow (Tuesday, Feb 17).

He said the Year of the Horse is regarded as a year full of energy and opportunity that may bring rapid changes, require swift action, and promise rewards for those who are diligent, courageous and focused.

“Like other cultural celebrations, Chinese New Year emphasises important values such as family unity. It is a time for close family members to reunite, especially during the reunion dinner, which strengthens family bonds, expresses gratitude, and honours ancestors.

“In Sarawak, and Malaysia generally, Chinese New Year is also a symbol of unity. It is widely celebrated through the concept of open house, which provides opportunities for people of various races to visit one another, understand different cultures, and strengthen goodwill.

“In this regard, my wife and I are proud to see that the open house culture remains vibrant during every celebration in Sarawak, and continues as a tradition that reflects the strong and solid unity among the various races in the state.

“It is a special time for us to practise the spirit of ‘Segulai Sejalai’ and uphold unity as the foundation of our nation’s strength.

“Let us continue to preserve and respect this diversity, for it is the most valuable and unique treasure possessed by the people of Sarawak, as expressed in our slogan, ‘Segulai Sejalai’,” he said.

Wan Junaidi also highlighted Sarawak’s economic growth, ensuring that prosperity will continue to bloom so that it can be achieved and enjoyed fairly by everyone, including the B40 and M40 groups.

He also calls on all quarters, especially the business community, to continue working hand in hand and ensure the wellbeing of the people of Sarawak.

“The Chinese community in Sarawak has long played an important role in the state’s development, particularly in the fields of economy and entrepreneurship.

“Undeniably, the Chinese community has been the backbone of many sectors in Sarawak’s economy, including trade, agriculture, commercial farming, modern enterprises, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and investment.

“In advancing their family businesses, they have also driven Sarawak’s economic growth,” he added.

Wan Junaidi recognised that the Chinese community also plays a significant role in various sectors such as politics, education and social development – key factors contributing to Sarawak’s success and progress as a progressive and harmonious region.

He expressed hope that all Sarawakians will continue to play their respective roles in developing Sarawak, support the government’s development agenda, and strengthen the state’s economy for the wellbeing of future generations.

“Let us continue to preserve and reinforce the spirit of goodwill and unity for shared progress.

“To those returning to their hometowns for family reunions during this festive holiday, drive carefully and arrive safely at your respective destinations,” he said.

“Take this opportunity to strengthen family ties, respect elders, and nurture love among the younger generation.

“May this year bring new light, true happiness and continuous success for your families and beloved Sarawak. Gong Xi Fa Cai!”
