SEMATAN: With cultural performances, local crafts, and sporting events in full swing, the Sematan Festival is driving not just tourism, but also deeper community and economic development in southern Sarawak.

“Lundu is blessed with natural treasures such as white sandy beaches, tropical rainforests, and beautiful mountain ranges.

“All of these have great potential to support the concept of natural healing through traditional treatments and nature therapy activities such as hiking, waterfall soaking, and relaxation in a peaceful environment,” said Tanjong Datu assemblyman Azizul Annuar Adenan, who represented the Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts.

He said the presence of visitors from outside the area has contributed to a positive boost in the state’s tourism industry, especially with a diverse programme that includes sports, concerts and cultural performances capable of attracting tourists and enhancing Sarawak’s image on the world stage.

“I am confident this event brings immense value to the local community, not just in terms of economic impact, but also by reinforcing social and cultural identity,” he said.

Azizul was delivering the Premier of Sarawak’s message on plans to develop Lundu into a healing and medical tourism destination, in line with the state government’s agenda to diversify its tourism offerings.

The organisation of Pesta Sematan is seen not only as a tourism initiative, but also as a platform for community integration, fostering pride in cultural heritage, and showcasing the natural beauty of Sarawak to the world.

He further expressed hope that the festival would serve as an ideal platform for the people of Lundu to highlight local products such as handcrafted items made from belian wood, beads, rattan, as well as agricultural and seafood products that reflect the area’s unique identity.

Also present were Kuching Division Resident, Dayang Joanita Azizah Abang Morshidi; Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier, Abang Abdul Aziz Abang Draup; Lundu District Officer, Awang Yusuf Awang Mostapha; and community leader Jumahdi Sabian.
