KUCHING: Healthcare workers, educators, and religious leaders are three vital pillars of society who deserve proper recognition and appreciation for their contributions to the people’s wellbeing.

According to Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Snowdan Lawan, healthcare workers, including doctors, nurses, and support staff in government clinics and hospitals across both urban and remote areas, are among the first who truly deserve such acknowledgement.

“When we’re unwell, where do we go? We look for a doctor. We look for a nurse. They work around the clock, 24 hours a day, seven days a week—to save lives.

Snowdan delivers his speech.

“That’s why I often remind longhouse residents to understand and value the work they do,” he said during the ‘Ngiling Bidai ‘ ceremony organised by the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) Dayak Staff Association here yesterday (July 5).

He noted that many people are not fully aware of the sacrifices made by healthcare workers, particularly those serving in rural areas with limited resources.

To support them, he said he has taken steps to assist clinics within his constituency by providing allocations for basic necessities, including air conditioning units and the expansion of clinic buildings.

Snowdan also expressed his appreciation for teachers, describing them as the backbone of children’s education—from primary school right through to university.

In addition, he acknowledged the invaluable contributions of religious leaders such as imams, ustaz, priests, and pastors, who play an essential role not only in spiritual guidance but also in fostering social unity within the community.

“When there’s a death or a religious ceremony, who do we turn to? These are the people who lead prayers and provide comfort and counsel.

“That is why I have always supported houses of worship in my area, be it mosques or churches,” he explained.

He also shared that under his ministerial purview, allocations are channelled to clinics, schools, and places of worship to ensure these institutions can operate more effectively and in greater comfort.

During the event, Snowdan also announced a contribution of RM20,000 to the SGHl Dayak Staff Association as a show of support for the association and its future community activities.
