MIRI: More than 350 residents from two villages in Sepupok were evacuated in the early hours of today following severe flooding caused by the overflow of Sungai Sebatuk.
According to the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), the emergency call was received at 12.30 am, prompting a rapid deployment of a Toyota Hilux utility vehicle and a team of firefighters from Batu Niah Fire and Rescue Station.
The crew, led by PBK I Jeffery Majin, arrived on site at 12.42 am and commenced operations shortly after.
Floodwaters reaching five feet submerged homes in Rumah Aron and Rumah Lumpoh.
Rescue teams assisted elderly residents and children using life jackets and ropes, shuttling them to higher ground at Tadika Sedidik Sepupok Niah in Subis.
Household data provided by local community representatives showed 57 families, comprising 250 people, were affected in Rumah Aron, while 27 families, or 114 residents, were displaced in Rumah Lumpoh.
Among those evacuated were significant numbers of elderly residents and children.
