KUCHING: Continuous heavy downpour since early this morning (Dec 30) caused several low-lying areas in the district to be inundated, prompting the opening of two temporary relief centres (PPS) to accommodate flood victims.

However, the exact figure of flood victims has yet to be disclosed as authorities are still conducting evacuation operations.

Following reports of rising floodwaters in Desa Wira, the Kuching District Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) had opened a PPS at Dewan Masyarakat Stapok to facilitate the evacuation of affected residents in Lorong 5i, Lorong 5j and Lorong 5k.

Meanwhile, another PPS at Dewan R-Piang, Kampung Sinar Budi Baru has also been opened as flood victims have begun arriving at the centre.

Residents in flood-prone areas have been urged to remain alert, prioritise safety and comply with instructions from authorities should evacuation be required.

Meanwhile, the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said an elderly man living in Lorong 5I, Desa Wira, declined to relocate to the PPS as he was not ready, despite floodwaters rising to knee level.

Firefighters provided him with the emergency contact number and advised him to call immediately should he require evacuation.
