SIBU: Firefighting operations to contain a bush fire along Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman have ended at 4.03 pm today (Mar 29) following a heavy downpour.

Firefighters and personnel from various agencies work to extinguish the bush fire using equipment such as an excavator and water pumps.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said operations had entered their third day, with firefighters continuing efforts earlier to contain the blaze.

Firefighting operations began at 9.30 am, focusing on strengthening firebreaks across all sectors to prevent further spread.

“Firefighting efforts are focused on three sectors involving firebreak construction and direct extinguishing methods, carried out with the assistance of several agencies,” it said.

As of today, the fire has affected approximately 16.4 hectares of land, with an additional 0.4 hectares recorded.

Currently, the department is still on the field to monitor the situation.

The incident was first reported on Mar 27 at 8 am, prompting personnel from the Sibu Sentral fire station to be deployed to the scene, about 15km away.

Upon arrival at 8.24 am, firefighters began suppression efforts, with no casualties reported.
