MARUDI: Several villages and parts of Marudi town were left waterlogged early Sunday morning after heavy rains combined with high river tides, pushing floodwaters across low-lying areas.

A monitoring team from the Civil Defence Force (APM Marudi) reported that water levels had begun creeping up on 5 September and have continued to rise with the persistent downpours.

By dawn on Sunday, at least seven locations were affected, including Kampung Narum, Kampung Ridan, Kampung Dagang, Kampung Cina, Kampung Padang Kerbau, central Marudi and the Marudi-Miri trunk road near Jalan Nanas.

Measurements showed flood depths ranging between 0.17 and 0.27 inches. Roads remain passable to all vehicles, but residents have been advised to stay alert.

“The trend is still upward and skies remain overcast. People should be ready to move if conditions worsen,” said District Civil Defence Officer, Lieutenant (PA) Mirwan Shah Masri.

No temporary evacuation centres have been opened. Authorities emphasised that while the situation is under control, the risk of further flooding remains high.

Four officers, led by Lance Corporal (PA) Mohammad Hassan, carried out patrols using a 4×4 ambulance and safety equipment, moving swiftly through the affected areas between 6:00 am and 7:30 am.

For now, life in Marudi continues with caution, as residents keep watch on the skies and the river’s edge, bracing for what may come if the rains do not ease.
