KUCHING: A five-acre heritage hub is planned for Kampung Segu Benuk, which is seen as a cultural revival in the making, and a major boost for cultural preservation and community-driven tourism, said Puncak Borneo Member of Parliament, Datuk Willie Mongin.
He said this centre will offer a dedicated space for Sarawak’s rich traditions to thrive, and its development will be carried out under the Greater Kuching Development Coordination Agency (GKCDA).
“The GKCDA will span five acres and serve as a central hub for cultural events, exhibitions, traditional parades and heritage showcases,” he said.
Willie announced the project during the Brarak & Bipajak Gawai Bisegu (BBGB) 2025 cultural parade event organised by the Segu Benuk Penrissen Association (PSBP) at Kampung Segu Benuk at Jalan Puncak Borneo here on Monday evening.
Meanwhile, he also stressed on the importance of creating a conducive, permanent venue that empowers local communities to celebrate and share their identity with a broader audience.
“I hope that all these plans can be realised as soon as possible, which in turn can contribute to sociocultural development in this area.
“The Sarawak Government’s commitment through GKCDA is a step toward preserving and promoting our heritage, not just for today, but for generations to come,” he said.
The cultural centre is expected to not only strengthen community pride but also attract tourists and cultural enthusiasts looking to experience the authentic heart of Borneo, making Kampung Segu Benuk a rising destination in Sarawak’s cultural tourism landscape, he said.
On the BBGB event, Willie, who is also the patron of PSBP, stated that he is very happy to see the enthusiastic response among the participants, which shows great spirit in promoting Bidayuh culture.
“It is also a platform to showcase our culture and strengthen the bonds between the Bidayuh community because of different food and music.
“This is the place for them to exhibit their respective sub-ethnicities.
“Therefore,we will also strive hard to include BBGB event in the Sarawak tourism calendar,” he said while expressing gratitude to everyone involved in organising the event.
