MIRI: Sarawak’s real estate and business events sectors are signalling renewed confidence with the appointment of Datuk Hii Chang Kee as the incoming Chairman of Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak).

Imasa Dinasti Sdn Bhd, the master developer of the Kenyalang Smart City (KSC) project in Northern Miri, welcomed the announcement, describing the move as timely for the state’s growth agenda.

In a statement released through its official Facebook page, the company expressed confidence that Hii’s background in public administration, service transformation, and digital innovation will strengthen Sarawak’s competitive edge in the global events landscape.

His tenure as Deputy State Secretary (Operations) has seen him champion improvements in government service delivery and communication, which industry players believe can translate into stronger international positioning for BESarawak.

The appointment is widely viewed as a strategic step that aligns with Sarawak’s ambitions to expand its conference, exhibitions and incentive travel footprint.

Imasa Dinasti noted that the business events sector plays a critical role in attracting investment, talent and new economic partnerships, particularly in emerging urban growth centres such as Miri.

Hii succeeds Datuk Seri Abang Abdul Karim Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, who retired in August after helming BESarawak during a period of expanding market visibility and international outreach.

“As Sarawak accelerates its development agenda, leadership continuity and fresh strategic thinking are important to keep the momentum strong,” the company noted.

Industry observers anticipate that Hii’s appointment will encourage closer collaboration across public and private sectors, fostering more inclusive, innovative and globally connected business event initiatives.
