KUCHING: First-time entrants Hipmau FC made a dream debut in 9-a-side football, overcoming scorching heat and tough opponents to emerge champions at the 9aside Invitational Cup YB Chong Chieng Jen 2025 on Saturday (June 14).

Hipmau FC clinched the title in dramatic fashion, edging out SWNB 5-4 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

Striker Ericson Teo said this was the club’s first participation in a 9-a-side tournament.

Teo celebrates with the trophy and medal following their title triumph.

“Our goal was to explore more small tournaments to gain experience and meet new friends from all over.

“It was a bit challenging at first to adapt to the different format, but thankfully, from the first match to the final, we managed to work together and build strong team chemistry,”he said when contacted by Sarawak Tribune.

Teo shared that despite the team being newcomers, they entered the tournament with the intention of winning — even though they knew the competition would be fierce.

“The hot weather was another big challenge, which drained our stamina since we usually play friendly matches at night.

“But with discipline, commitment, and hard work from every player and the management — and with incredible support from our fans — we managed to achieve what we set out to do: become champions,” he said.

When asked about future plans, Teo said Hipmau FC is open to more tournaments.

“God willing, if we have the opportunity, Hipmau FC will definitely consider joining more football tournaments in the future,” he added.

Hipmau FC had a stellar run in the tournament, starting strong in the group stage with back-to-back victories over Kpg Sudat (2-1) and D2FC (2-0).

They maintained their momentum in the semi-finals with a convincing 2-0 win against Kpg Semeba before edging SWNB in the final.
