KUCHING: Sarawak’s premier art space, Hoan Gallery, celebrated its fourth anniversary on Friday with an evening of art, culture and community supported by its main benefactor, Hock Seng Lee (HSL).

The celebration, held at Precinct Grande, La Promenade, featured a retrospective exhibition highlighting the gallery’s major showcases over the years, reflecting Sarawak’s vibrant and evolving art scene.

“In the blink of an eye, Hoan Gallery is already four years old.

“Our journey has been filled with inspiring artists and supportive visitors who have made this space what it is today,” said gallery founder Hoan Kee Huang.

Hoan said that the anniversary revisited several of the gallery’s notable showcases, including works by Bong Choo Chew, Chong Liew Syn, Joanne Lau, David Chew, Sylvester Weilding Jussem and Dr Faizuan Mat.

“We have been able to maintain regular exhibitions because Sarawak has a wealth of artistic talent.

“Every show brings new perspectives and tells new stories about our community,” he added.

HSL, the builder-developer of La Promenade Mall, has supported Hoan Gallery since its inception through sponsorships, event collaborations and art initiatives under its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme.

“Our directors and staff are directly involved in the gallery’s activities.

“We’ve sponsored shows, purchased artworks as corporate gifts, and worked closely with artists to support their creative efforts,” said HSL leasing manager Angeline Ong.

Ong added that the partnership has strengthened HSL’s connection with the local creative community.

“It’s been rewarding to see how art brings people together. I’ve grown closer to Sarawak through the artists and stories behind their work,” she said.

HSL’s commitment to promoting the arts also extends to its show houses, where local artworks are featured to encourage appreciation among homeowners.

“Homes become personal when you add art to them. It’s one of the most meaningful ways to make a space your own,” said HSL assistant property sales manager Angie Joan.

The anniversary event brought together artists, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) students, government officials, collectors and residents of the La Promenade community, many of whom have supported the gallery since its early days.

Hoan said that visitors often return to view new exhibitions and purchase local artworks.

“We’ve seen buyers from as far as the UK, Spain and Singapore. Their enthusiasm for Sarawak’s art scene continues to motivate us,” he said.

Established in December 2021, Hoan Gallery has grown into one of Sarawak’s leading art platforms, having hosted nine major exhibitions ranging from traditional oil paintings to modern interpretive works.

The gallery continues to serve as a hub for both established and emerging artists in the state.

Currently, it is hosting an exhibition by Kuching-born watercolourist Marvin Chew, featuring over 70 pieces that capture Kuching’s heritage.

Hoan Gallery is open daily at La Promenade Mall, Kuching.
