KUCHING: The topic of homosexuality is often subject to varying opinions from the general public.

Recently, a video has made its way on social media (WhatsApp) depicting Muhammad Haziq Abdul Aziz, Santubong PKR Youth chief, engaging in homosexual acts allegedly with a federal minister.

According to Sarawak Mental Health Association chairman Dr Ismail Drahman, homosexuality is defined as the emotional and sexual attraction to an individual of the same gender.

Dr Ismail Drahman

“These days, homosexuality is not considered as a mental disorder.”

He said that people tend to have different theories on possible factors that could lead to this sexual orientation.

“There may be a genetic factor to it – people could just be born homosexual, or they may be affected by childhood experiences.”

However, he said that now people think of it as due to genetics.

When enquired about the general acceptance of homosexuality in Malaysia in this modern era compared to past decades, he opined that the cultural rejection is still present.

“It is still largely not acceptable in the local society, and there are many medical, social and religious implications on homosexual relationships,” he said.

He did however add that acceptance may be different in other developed countries that are more liberal.

“They are more open in their social expression and probably consider this topic as a human rights issue,” Dr Ismail commented.

He also emphasised that it is not a medical problem.
