SERIAN: Two middle-aged mentally disabled siblings here continue to receive assistance from Hope Place Kuching following the death of their elderly father late last year.
According to a press release from the non-governmental organisation, Jong Thian Poh, 62, lives with his younger sister, Lee Chu, 59, after their father, Jong Sze Khin, passed away in December 2025 at the age of 95.
“Hope Place had previously extended aid to the family while the father was still alive and has continued its support to ensure the siblings’ basic needs are met.”
Thian Poh has never held stable employment and has long relied on collecting recyclable items to earn a modest income, often cycling into Serian town to gather items from markets and coffee shops.
His situation worsened after he was involved in an accident in 2021 that resulted in a head injury and required hospitalisation.
Lee Chu, who does not work and is difficult to communicate with, generally keeps to herself and avoids eye contact.
Despite her limited interaction with people, she is known to have a strong affection for animals, particularly dogs, and cares for several at their home.
The siblings live a simple lifestyle, sometimes foraging for wild vegetables for food, while Thian Poh continues to collect firewood for cooking despite having access to a gas tank.
A church group visits them about once a week to check on their wellbeing, while Hope Place currently provides basic food assistance.
Members of the public who wish to assist or seek further information may contact Hope Place or Persatuan Kebajikan Harapan Kuching (PKHK) at 082-505987 or 013-5672775, with donations welcomed and receipts issued upon request.
