KUCHING: The hornbill has been identified as one of the most valuable species in Sarawak due to its highly prized casque, making it a primary target in the wildlife trade.

Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment, Datuk Len Talif said the high value of the species is not only reflected in its price on the black market, but also in its importance to the natural ecosystem.

“In terms of monetary value, the hornbill is among the most expensive and is highly sought after.

“However, the true value of this wildlife lies in its role in ensuring environmental sustainability,” he said.

He said this during a press conference after the ceremony for the presentation of appointment letters to Community Rangers and the flag-off of Operasi Bersepadu Khazanah, as well as the launch of the ‘1,000 Visits to Save Wildlife’ Programme (Sarawak level) on Saturday morning.

He explained that many hornbill species numbers in Sarawak remain under control due to continuous enforcement and monitoring efforts by relevant agencies, including the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC).

“However, challenges still exist as illegal hunting and trade activities cannot be completely eradicated.”

“Hence, a strong law enforcement presence, coupled with public education on wildlife protection and conservation, is crucial in protecting this birds species and other wildlife.

He said with the involvement of agencies such as the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), the police, and others, this will curb any illegal activities involving wildlife.

Len also emphasised that education and public awareness on wildlife protection and conservation are essential to help people understand what is allowed and what is prohibited.
