SIBU: Hornland Dance Theatre (Hornland) has been lauded as it celebrates its 30th anniversary – a milestone defined not just by time, but by passion, discipline, creativity, and community spirit.
In giving the accolade, Bawang Assan state assemblyman, Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh, paid tribute to the visionary founder, the dedicated director, and all instructors who have guided the troupe from its humble beginnings to where it stands today.
“Your devotion has shaped countless young dancers, nurturing not just skills, but confidence, discipline, teamwork, and the pursuit of excellence.
“Hornland is known not only for graceful performances, but also for a spirit built on rigorous training, teamwork, respect for tradition, and courage to innovate.
“Over the past three decades, the troupe has nurtured talents who shone on national and international stages, as well as those who continue contributing to the community through arts education,” he said at the Horland’s 30th Anniversary Dance Concert held at a prominent hotel here on Friday night.
According to Wong, one of Hornland’s most remarkable achievements is its effort in organising international dance festivals – inviting dancers and choreographers from countries far and near to come to Sibu.
He pointed out that these festivals have turned Sibu into a vibrant centre of cultural exchange, and opened doors for the young dancers to learn, collaborate, and build global friendships.
Through performances and international engagement, he said, Hornland has enriched the cultural landscape of Sibu and Sarawak, and has helped strengthen community bonds, promote cultural appreciation, and enhance the artistic identity of the region.
“As we celebrate this 30-year journey, I encourage the troupe to continue its mission with renewed energy – to nuture talent, expand artistic boundaries, and pursue greater international exposure.
“I also hope that parents, community leaders and supporters will remain steadfast in backing Horland’s endeavours,” Wong added.
Meanwhile, Hornland’s Artistic Director, Cheng Ing Kuan, who also spoke, stressed that Hornland has never been the dream of one person; actually it’s a living community woven together by time, passion and belief.
“Through dance, we tell the stories of this land, we connect people with one another and with culture. Every work we present is a dialogue with our audience; every moment on stage is a sincere offering from our hearts.
“These 30 years are not an ending, but a reflection, and a new beginning,” Cheng said.
Also in attendance were Bukit Assek state assemblyman, Joseph Chieng Jin Ek, and Sibu Muncipal Council (SMC) Deputy Chairman, Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley.
