KUCHING: On average, all hotels in Kuching are recording robust occupancy levels ahead of the New Year, with festive travel and school holidays driving strong demand across the city.
The year-end period has traditionally been a peak season for the hospitality industry, and this year is no exception as travellers plan short getaways and staycations.
Hotel operators noted that bookings have surged in recent weeks, reflecting improved consumer confidence and a growing preference for celebrating the New Year locally.
General Manager, Grand Margherita Hotel & Riverside Majestic Hotel Kenneth Perreau said both properties are fully booked for the New Year period.
He said this when asked about current occupancy levels in both hotels yesterday (Dec30).
Kenneth added that the demand for New Year stays has increased compared to the same period last year, signalling stronger interest from travellers.
He noted that most guests staying during the New Year period are local residents, highlighting the continued importance of domestic travel to the hospitality sector.
“However, we are also seeing significant numbers of international guests this year, which adds to a more diverse guest profile,” he said.
“Family-oriented offerings continue to drive bookings, with school break packages emerging as the most popular option among New Year guests.
“These packages are particularly attractive to families seeking convenience and value during the long school holidays, combining accommodation with added services and attractive sightseeing,” he said.
He cited New Year bookings typically have a strong positive impact on the hotel’s overall business performance at the start of the year.
“Demand during this period is consistently high, often pushing occupancy levels close to full capacity,” he said, adding that this significantly boosts room revenue.
He explained that the festive surge also drives ancillary income from food and beverage outlets, events, and other in-house services.
According to him, strong New Year performance provides a solid revenue foundation and positive momentum as hotels transition into the first quarter.
“With encouraging booking trends and healthy demand from both local and international guests, hotel operators remain optimistic about sustaining growth in the months ahead,” he said.
