KUCHING: The hotel industry has been urged to open more space to showcase works of local artists. “The hotel industry should play their roles in promoting the talent of local artists so that they could compete in the global market,” said Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports, Datuk Snowdan Lawan when launching an artist playground at Pullman Hotel here, yesterday.

Snowdan added that Sarawak should follow countries such as Singapore which showcased local paintings in their hotel lobby to their visitors. Pullman Kuching in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) unveiled its first art gallery which featured a broad spectrum of modern contemporary artworks yesterday.

The paintings are works of Unimas’ lecturers and students of Applied and Creative Arts Faculty. Snowdan urged other hotels to emulate Pullman in promoting the state’s rich cultures and heritage. Cluster general manager of Pullman Kuching and Pullman Miri Waterfront Ishak Ibrahim said the paintings and sculptures displayed at the hotel were for sale and part of the proceeds would go to a fund for the less fortunate and underprivileged.

“Besides that, the art gallery also acts as a platform for aspiring artists to showcase their works where it will be viewed by both local and international audience”, he said. During the event, Snowdan witnessed an exchange of memorandum between Unimas and Pullman Kuching.
