JULAU: A 35-year-old housewife was arrested after testing positive for drugs following a police chase involving a Toyota van in Pakan on Wednesday (Feb 11).
Julau police chief DSP Alif Haiqal Ramesh Abdullah said the suspect was detained under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 after a urine screening conducted at the Pakan police station returned positive for amphetamine, commonly known as syabu.
The arrest followed an incident at about 3pm when a police patrol team came across a white Toyota van along Jalan Pakan.
“When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, it sped off and turned into Simpang Sungai Sawa before losing control and skidding to the roadside.
“The male driver fled into nearby bushes, while a 35-year-old woman who was in the vehicle was detained,” he said.
A body search and inspection of the vehicle did not uncover any prohibited items.
The woman was brought to the Pakan police station for further checks, where she tested positive for drugs.
During questioning, she admitted to being involved in drug abuse since January 2019 and said she last consumed syabu on Feb 10 at her residence.
“She also claimed that she obtained her latest supply on Feb 10 from a man known as ‘Kacak’ at Batu 16, Jalan Entabai, Pakan,” he added.
The suspect will be charged in the Sarikei Magistrates’ Court once the pathology report from Kuching is obtained. The case remains under investigation.
Commenting on the case, the district police chief said drug abuse, particularly involving syabu, remains prevalent in Pakan.
He urged the community to channel information on drug-related activities to the IPD Julau hotline and work together with police to curb activities that harm families, society and the district’s image.
“In line with the slogan ‘Polis dan masyarakat berpisah tiada’, we call on the public to be the eyes and ears of the police,” he said.
